HC Deb 12 December 1957 vol 579 c163W
103. Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that a number of motor vehicles are being driven at night in the London area with only one sidelight burning; and what action is being taken by the Metropolitan Police to stop this dangerous practice.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police that appropriate action is taken whenever lighting offences come to notice. In 1956 in the Metropolitan Police District 2,277 persons were prosecuted and 12,581 received written cautions in cases in which either one or both front lights were not being shown. In addition, nearly 70,000 oral warnings were given.
