HC Deb 12 December 1957 vol 579 c156W
89. Mr. Hastings

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the two detainees at Athi River Camp, whose case came before a High Court recently and on whom 70 weals and bruises were stated to have been found, were medically examined before the administration of corporal punishment.

Mr. Profumo

These detainees were not sentenced to corporal punishment but were injured during the quelling of an incipient riot in which they were participating. Medical examination shortly afterwards showed that the injuries were not serious enough for the men to be sent to hospital.
