asked the Minister of Health if he will give the latest figures of nurses employed in the general hospital service in the North-Eastern Regional Board area; and how such figures compare with the relative period in 1956.

The total nursing staff at all hospitals, other than mental and mental deficiency hospitals in the Newcastle Regional Hospital area at 30th September, 1957, was 6,242 whole-time and 1,327 part-time. The corresponding figures at 30th September, 1956, were 6,263 whole-time and 1,153 part-time.
