§ 70 and 72. Mr. Ripponasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) the dollar value of the £ sterling in terms of internal purchasing power in the United States of America as at 30th November, 1957; and what, in terms of this figure, is the real value of the present travel allowance of £100;
(2) what he estimates would be the annual cost in dollars of removing the present restriction on the exchange of the £ sterling for dollars for the purpose of travel in the United States of America.
§ Mr. PowellIt is impossible to compare with any precision the internal purchasing power of money in different countries, and such comparisons are not relevant to the amount of foreign exchange we can afford for travel abroad. I cannot estimate the cost of removing all restrictions on travel in the U.S.A.
