HC Deb 04 December 1957 vol 579 c55W
Sir J. Hutchison

asked the Minister of Defence if he will make a statement about the construction of the defence installations in the area of the Clyde.

Mr. Sandys

Certain facilities are being provided in the Clyde area, as part of the N.A.T.O. infrastructure programme, to support N.A.T.O. naval forces under the command of SACLANT. They will include an anti-submarine boom such as was used in the last war, some oil and ammunition storage, and improvements to signals communications and to some existing airfields. The responsibility for executing these projects will rest with the Admiralty. The cost will be shared by the N.A.T.O. countries in accordance with existing agreements. The work will he spread over a number of years.
