HC Deb 02 December 1957 vol 579 cc9-10W
64. Dr. Bennett

asked the Minister of Health what official research is in progress to establish the extent to which protozoal, bacterial and virus diseases, especially poliomyelitis, can survive in heavily-polluted sea water and can infect persons immersed in this fluid.

Mr. Walker-Smith

A committee of the Public Health Laboratory Service is making a survey of the degree of bacterial pollution of sea water on various sections of the coast of England and Wales. At the same time it is trying to find out whether any relation exists between the occurrence of enteric disease, including poliomyelitis, in England and Wales and recent bathing in heavily polluted sea water.
