§ Sir K. Josephasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases in 1955 and 1956 fines were imposed without time to pay being given under the Money Payment Act, 1935, and in how many of such cases the person concerned was sent to prison.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerI regret that the number of persons not given time to pay fines is not available. The number of persons received in prison for nonpayment of fines who had not been given time to pay was 2,537 in 1955 and 2,426 in 1956. These figures represent respectively 55 per cent. and 51 per cent. of the total number received in prison for nonpayment of fines in each of those years.
