HC Deb 02 December 1957 vol 579 cc18-9W
Mr. Ross

asked the Postmaster-General how many of the newly defined local areas are not fully equipped with automatic dialling telephones.

Mr. Marples

There are 1,200 manual exchanges distributed throughout the country and each of the newly defined local call areas includes one or more of them. None can therefore be said to be fully equipped with automatic dialling telephones. In the country as a whole 80 per cent. of the exchanges are automatic.
