HC Deb 02 August 1957 vol 574 cc287-8W
Major Sir F. Markham

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education what would be the estimated net saving if educational divisional executives were to be abolished; and what would be the estimated net saving if the number of existing committees were to be reduced by half.

Sir E. Boyle

On the information available, it is difficult to make any reliable estimate of net saving. If divisional administration were abolished everywhere, including the excepted districts, and nothing were substituted, the net saving in administrative costs, which would not necessarily be realised immediately, might be of the order of £1 million a year. The answer to the second part of the Question would depend on various factors and, in particular, on the process by which the number of divisional executives was reduced by half.
