§ Mr. Stonehouseasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if advisers from the United Kingdom to assist in the encouragement and development of the 200W trades union movement in Uganda have been appointed; what is the number of advisers who are now engaged in this capacity; and what their trade union experience has been.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydIt is the policy of the Uganda Government to encourage the development of trade unions, and this forms part of the duties of the Labour Commissioner and Staff of the Labour Department at present numbering thirty-six in all. None of the officers at present serving in the Labour Department has had experience as a trade union official, but one with several years experience as a trade union official in this country will shortly take up his appointment, in replacement of a senior official who has such experience and who, after eight years in the Labour Department, has been transferred on promotion to another Department to deal with personnel matters.
