§ 41. Mr. J. Hyndasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what enforced movements of Africans have taken place from Mount Mategere in Tanganyika; how many have been moved; for what reasons; and under what conditions of resettlement and compensation.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydOne hundred and forty-six people were directed to cease cultivating in certain areas in the Matogoro Hills in the Songea District of Tanganyika in June, 1950. This action 193W was necessary in order to preserve vital water sources in the area which were being threatened by erosion following over-cultivation. No Africans were permanently resident in the area and the question of resettlement did not arise. Agreed compensation was, however, paid in certain cases.
