HC Deb 15 April 1957 vol 568 cc166-7W
56. Mr. S. 0. Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps he is taking to protect British ships carrying goods to North Korea, in view of the threat made by the South Korean Foreign Minister, Cho Chung, on 11th April, that such ships will be stopped by the South Korean navy.

Mr. Ian Harvey

An official record of the Foreign Minister's remarks in the Korean National Assembly on 11th April is not yet available but the majority of Press reports agree that he was referring to carriage of strategic materials. Since it is not proposed to relax our controls on the export of such goods to North Korea, and the Foreign Minister himself has subsequently stated that it was "inconceivable" that we would do so, the question of protecting British ships does not arise.
