HC Deb 04 April 1957 vol 568 c66W
9. Mr. H. Wilson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the total receipts into the United Kingdom of gold from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1956, and in the period from 1st January, 1957, to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Birch

Out of total gold bullion imports worth£234 million in 1956,£20 million came from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It is not the practice to reveal gold movements over short periods. As the right hon. Gentleman knows, figures of gold imports have no direct relationship at all with the amount of gold taken into the gold and dollar reserves.
