§ 1. Mr. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he will not introduce the necessary legislation enabling him to put Ministers and Junior Ministers on the same basis as Members of Parliament in having to meet the cost of their postage, telephones, travel, secretarial, living-away-from-home expenses and all other expenses wholly and necessarily incurred whilst carrying out their duties to the State, from their Ministerial salaries.
§ Mr. PowellThe expenses of Ministers referred to by the hon. Member are regarded as part of the expenditure incurred by their Departments.
§ 2. Mr. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, as an economy measure and as an example to private business, he will take the necessary action to ensure that all civil servants, State employees, and members of boards of nationalised industries, shall, similarly to Members of Parliament, meet the costs of their postage, telephones, travel, secretarial and living-away-from-home expenses and all other expenses wholly and necessarily incurred whilst carrying out their duties to the State, from their State salaries.
