§ 58. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the ban has been imposed by the Sokoto Native Authority in Nigeria on the holding of election meetings by the Northern Elements Progressive Union ; and if this is with his approval.
§ Mr. MaclayThe Sokoto Native Authority rejected, on grounds of public order, an application by the Northern Elements Progressive Union to hold a week of meetings and processions in a single constituency where no candidate from this party was standing. The party has been readily granted permits for meetings elsewhere in Sokoto Province. My approval was not required.
