HC Deb 26 November 1956 vol 561 c1W
10. Mr. Keegan

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the extent of the Hungarian refugee problem is yet known; and whether Her Majesty's Government are prepared to accept further refugees, without qualification, should it be necessary.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

The latest estimate of Hungarian refugees who have crossed into Austria is 82,000. In addition some hundreds of refugees are believed to have entered Yugoslavia but the exact number is not known.

As announced on 23rd November, Her Majesty's Government have decided to waive the limit on the number of refugees admitted to this country and to accept them without individual interviews.
