HC Deb 09 May 1956 vol 552 c110W
72. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken by the Government to bring about a settlement of the rubber workers' dispute in Malaya before the go-slow policy is put into operation on 10th May; and if arbitration has been offered by either side.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

A meeting on 7th May between the Malayan Planting Industries Employers' Association and the National Union of Plantation Workers failed to reach a settlement to this dispute. The Commissioner of Labour is in contact with both sides as a conciliator. The employers have offered arbitration, which has been rejected by the union.
