§ 70. Mr. J. Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the dissatisfaction felt by the Mauritius Labour Party, the majority party in the Legislative Council, regarding his proposals for constitutional change in that Colony, especially that to introduce proportional representation; and whether he will reconsider this in particular.
§ Mr. HareMy right hon. Friend is aware that the proposals do not meet in full the conflicting desires of the different sections of the community in Mauritius, but they are designed to meet the needs of a complex political, social and religious situation and should be considered as a whole. I understand that the Governor is at present discussing them with representative members of Council and that a further meeting is to be held tomorrow.
