§ Mr. H. MacmillanThe total amount received by the Exchequer in the financial year 1954–55 in respect of Surtax was £134,700,000. Of this, it is estimated that about £30 million was paid by taxpayers with incomes not exceeding £5,000, after deduction of expenses and charges but before deduction of Income Tax and Surtax.
