HC Deb 26 June 1956 vol 555 c31W
Mr. Mayhew

asked the Secretary of State for War what steps he proposes to take, following the criticism expressed in the Third Report of the Select Committee on Estimates, to expedite the rebuilding of the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, and to improve the married quarters.

Mr. F. Maclean

When its Report was published planning was already in progress for rebuilding these barracks. As I explained in a Written Answer to the hon. Member for Erith and Crayford (Mr. Dodds) on 1st March, we plan to begin replacing living accommodation in 1958. The scheme is a large one, and I cannot hold out any hope of expediting it.

Structurally sound married quarters are being modernised and those which are unsound will be replaced. A start is being made this year.
