HL Deb 13 June 1956 vol 197 c978WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government whether Press reports of arrangements to currently import citrus fruits from the U.S.A. in payment by sterling are correct.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE DUCHY OF LANCASTER (THE EARL OF SELKIRK)

The Press reports were not all accurate in detail. As was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on June 1, agreement has been reached with the United States authorities on arrangements (as in 1954 and 1955) for imports of a limited quantity of United States canned grapefruit, to be purchased by private traders in the United Kingdom with funds made available under the U.S. Mutual Security Act, 1954. It has been agreed that imports to the value of $1,000,000 (£360,000) f.o.b. will be admitted into the United Kingdom during the period July 1st-September 30th, 1956.

House adjourned at twenty-seven minutes before six o'clock.
