HL Deb 30 July 1956 vol 199 cc414-5WA
LORD HANKEY

asked Her Majesty's Government for the following information about Japanese nationals serving sentences as war criminals in Japan: (1) How many are held in Sugama prison or elsewhere on behalf of Great Britain. the United States of America, France, the Dominions, China, the Philippine Republic or any other country, as well as the numbers on parole; (2) What are the prospects of further release of prisoners in the several categories.

THE MARQUESS OF READING

There are no major Japanese war criminals who were sentenced by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East still in gaol. Eleven are on parole. Of lesser war criminals sentenced by United Kingdom Military Courts, there are seven still in prison and three on parole. Further releases of these remaining cases are contemplated in clue course.

Other war criminals held in Sugamo Prison are the sole responsibility of the countries on whose behalf they are held and I am not in a position to give information about them.
