HL Deb 30 July 1956 vol 199 c413WA
LORD MATHERS

asked Her Majesty's Government what is the present position with regard to the research being conducted into the question of drink in relation to road accidents, especially regarding blood or other tests; whether any conclusions have been reached; what action is contemplated by Her Majesty's Government thereanent; and when it is intended to publish the report.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

Research is at present being carried out under the auspices of the Medical Research Council, with the collaboration of the Road Research Laboratory, on the effect of small doses of alcohol on skill in driving motor vehicles. Attempts are being made to relate the observed effects on behaviour to the amount of alcohol circulating in the blood. No conclusive results have yet been obtained, and until the work has been completed it is impossible for Her Majesty's Government to decide whether any action is required. Nor is it possible at this stage to give a date for publication.
