HC Deb 26 July 1956 vol 557 cc57-8W
31. Mr. Bence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what tasks have been allocated to the Women's Voluntary Services within Civil Defence.

Major Lloyd-George

W.V.S., as the women's auxiliary service to the Civil Defence Corps, undertakes:

  1. 1. To build up its own membership so that the organisation in an emergency can help as auxiliaries to the main services of Civil Defence.
  2. 2. To give every assistance to local authorities with the organisation and training of the Welfare Section.
  3. 3. To encourage as many of its members as possible to join the Civil Defence Corps, particularly the Welfare Section.

W.V.S. also plays a valuable part in spreading knowledge of basic civil defence measures amongst members of the public.

Similar arrangements apply in Scotland.
