HC Deb 19 July 1956 vol 556 c106W
67 and 68. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether he will now introduce legislation which, while retaining the death penalty, will amend the law in certain respects and modify the procedure connected with the passing of the death sentence;

(2) whether he will consider the introduction of the Scottish law relating to murder in England and Wales.

Major Lloyd-George

As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister said in reply to the hon. Member for Nelson and Colne (Mr. S. Silverman) on 17th July, the Government are considering the whole question of capital punishment. I would ask the hon. Lady to await the statement which my right hon. Friend proposes to make before the end of the Session.
