§ 52. Mr. J. Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a further statement upon the recent disturbances in Sierra Leone against the increases in hut tax.
§ Mr. HareI am glad to be able to say that since the end of January no further disturbances have been reported.
The Governor is to appoint Sir Herbert Cox, Q.C., lately Chief Justice in Tanganyika, to be Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry. Its terms of reference will be to inquire into the causes of the disturbances and the action taken to deal with them, and to make recommendations. My right hon. Friend hopes to announce very shortly the full membership of the Commission, which will begin its work as soon as possible.
