HL Deb 15 February 1956 vol 195 cc1038-9WA
LORD ELTON

asked Her Majesty's Government whether they will state how many of Her Majesty's West Indian subjects have entered the United Kingdom during each of the last four years for which statistics are available, with separate totals for males and females.

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE Fox THE HOME DEPARTMENT (LORD MANCROFT)

As the law stands, there is no power to require British subjects arriving in the United Kingdom to provide the information necessary for the compilation of complete statistics, but it is estimated that the numbers of British subjects from the West Indies who have come to this country during the last four years in substantial parties with the intention of remaining here are approximately as follows:

Males Females Total
1952 1,500 700 2,200
1953 1,700 600 2,300
1954 6,600 2,600 9,200
1955 17,600 8,100 25,700
