HC Deb 15 February 1956 vol 548 c256W
Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what progress is being made with the provision of schooling for children of refugees, under United Nations control, in Germany, Austria, and Italy; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Primary education is compulsory in these countries and I understand that most refugee children go to school until the age of fourteen. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, working through various voluntary agencies, helps to provide further training and education beyond this age, particularly for children in Germany and Austria. Grants are made towards the cost of apprenticeship or vocational training, and assistance is given to high school pupils and university students to enable them to complete their courses.
