§ 74. Mr. W. T. Williamsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what were the facts and matters that weighed with him in deciding upon the release of the three men imprisoned for the attack upon Police Constable Pye; and upon what considerations the compensation paid to them was determined.
§ Major Lloyd-GeorgeI would refer the hon. and learned Member to the Answer which I gave on 26th January to a Question by the hon. Member for Sunderland, North (Mr. Willey).
§ 75. Mr. W. T. Williamsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his inquiries have satisfied him that in the preparation of the prosecution of the three men, Emery, Powers and Thompson, every precaution was taken to prevent such a miscarriage of justice as occurred; and what action he proposes to prevent such a miscarriage occurring again.
209W
§ Major Lloyd-GeorgeWhile I have no direct responsibility for a police force other than the Metropolitan Police, the inquiries which were made by my direction do not indicate that there was any mistake in the preparation of the prosecution of these three men, and no further action seems to be called for on my part.
