ThorneycroftDecisions have been taken and announced over the last three years on applications for increased protective duties on a wide range of horticultural produce, and orders have been made increasing a number of these duties, including those on plums, plum 241W pulp, lettuce and tomatoes. A similar application for an increase in the import duty on apples is still under consideration. Quantitative restrictions are imposed in order to safeguard the balance of payments and not for protective purposes.
