HC Deb 12 December 1956 vol 562 cc46-7W
69. Mr. Philips Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the Governments of Tanganyika and Uganda have lifted certain restrictions on the fishing of Lake Victoria against the advice of the East African Fisheries Research Organisation; that the effect of the proposed change in the size of net meshes will lead to depletion of the stock of fishes and especially of tilapia esculenta, the most important species for food supplies; and whether he will request those governments to reconsider the matter.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

None of the East African Governments has yet lifted the restrictions referred to, but I understand that the Governments of Tanganyika and Uganda are about to do so. The Lake Victoria Fisheries Service will keep a close watch on the effects of the lifting of the restrictions and give warning of any signs of damage occurring to the fisheries of the Lake.
