HC Deb 11 December 1956 vol 562 c33W
Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the number of refugees who have crossed the Hungarian frontiers to the latest convenient date; and, of those so crossing, how many have asked Her Majesty's Government that they may be accepted as immigrants within the British Empire and Commonwealth.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Up to 10th December approximately 126,000 Hungarian refugees had arrived in Austria. On 7th December the Yugoslav Government announced that 859 Hungarian refugees had arrived in Yugoslavia. I understand that many of the refugees who have arrived in Austria, including those who have since come to the United Kingdom, wish to proceed to other Commonwealth countries, but no precise figures are yet available.
