HC Deb 06 December 1956 vol 561 cc164-5W
74. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the estimated cost of the projected roundabout at the southern approach to Lambeth Bridge; what would be the approximate cost of a flyover and underpass; and if he will substitute such a scheme for the roundabout in order to maximise the flow of traffic.

Mr. Watkinson

The estimated cost of the roundabout is £50,000. A flyover or underpass would probably cost over £1,000,000 and a roundabout would still be necessary for the large volume of turning traffic. Such a scheme would be a matter in the first place for consideration by the London County Council as improvement authority, but because of its cost and the need to carry out urgent schemes elsewhere in London, I do not propose to ask them to consider it in preference to the roundabout, on which work started on 3rd December.
