asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the strength of the police service in England and Wales, including the Metropolitan Police; and what is the authorised complement.

On 31st October, 1956, the total authorised establishment of police forces in England and Wales was 73,907 male officers and 2,494 women officers; the actual strength was 65,595 men and 2,220 women.
