HC Deb 05 December 1956 vol 561 cc131-2W
103. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will increase the proportion of information officers employed by his Department who have had practical training in journalism or advertising.

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I do not think that there is a need for any substantial increase. The production of material for use by information officers abroad is largely concentrated in the Central Office of Information, and it is there rather than abroad that journalistic and advertising experience can be best applied.

104. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many information officers, both United Kingdom-based and otherwise, are employed by his Department in the United States of America; and how many of them have had practical training in journalism or advertising.

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Thirty officers are employed on full-time information work in the United States of America. Of these, twenty have Press or advertising experience.
