HC Deb 02 August 1956 vol 557 c180W
50. Mr. Osborne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that the Treasury Bill interest rate in Canada is 2.49 per cent. or about one-half the United Kingdom rate; that many Canadian investors will not purchase British Treasury Bills despite their relative high rate of interest because they fear repayment will not be made in Canadian dollars; and if he will give an assurance that repayment will be made in Canadian dollars, and so encourage the investment of Canadian funds in this country.

Sir E. Boyle

The Answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes." As regards the other parts, it has been, and remains, our policy to allow repayment, in sterling to a Canadian account, of any investment by residents of Canada in United Kingdom Treasury bills. Sterling on a Canadian account may be freely disposed of for Canadian dollars.
