HC Deb 27 April 1956 vol 551 cc173-5W
Sir C. Taylor

asked the Secretary to the Treasury why Statutory Instrument. 1956, No. 485, has been made, which

under the principal headings for the financial years 1951–52, 1952–53, 1953–54, 1954–55, and 1955–56, together with the estimates as published in the respective Defence Statements.

Sir W. Monckton

The information is as follows:

reduces from 50 per cent. to 5 per cent. the rate of Purchase Tax on garments made of rabbits' skin or of woolled sheep or lambs' skin.

Mr. H. Brooke

This Order was made because the 50 per cent. rate with no D relief was more than the goods concerned would bear, a position which threatened to have adverse effects on the fur trade as a whole, including the important export trade in furskins. The garments concerned now bear the same rate of tax as garments made of cloth or imitation fur, with which they are directly competitive.
