HC Deb 26 April 1956 vol 551 c171W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that between 40 and 60 elephants are being killed each month by poachers in the Tsavo National Park of Kenya; and whether he will take immediate measures to increase the number of rangers in the park and increase the limit of the statutory sentences which can be imposed upon those caught in this traffic.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

My right hon. Friend is aware of the damage done by poachers in Tsavo National Park. The Governor of Kenya is considering what steps could be taken to strengthen the Game Department. In addition, a committee has been set up to consider the formulation of a long-term game preservation policy, the staffing of the Game Department and the need to strengthen the Game Laws.
