HC Deb 25 April 1956 vol 551 cc141-2W
40. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that there are only about 10 Africans from Northern Rhodesia receiving higher education in the United Kingdom; and whether he is taking sufficient steps in expanding secondary education in this Protectorate so that there may be men and women candidates for the new multi racial university of Central Africa.

Mr. Hare

Yes, but there are twenty-one students at South African universities and four at Makerere. The Northern Rhodesian Government are vigorously adapting their educational policy so as to ensure that as many local Africans as possible gain admission to the new University College at the time of opening and in subsequent years. They are giving special priority to the education of girls.
