asked the Minister of Education how many full-time students enrolled at universities and other institutes of higher education in England and Wales in the session 1954–55; and how many of these students were in receipt of a local authority grant.

The numbers are as follows:

  1. (1) 67,562 students in universities, of whom 32,259 had grants from local education authorities, and 13,036 from my Department.
  2. (2) 63,149 students in major establishments of further education, of whom 17,104 had maintenance grants from local education authorities, while many others received aid in respect of fees, books, travelling and other incidental expenses.

  4. (3) 25,106 students in teacher training colleges, of whom about 14,500 received grants towards boarding and tuition from local education authorities, and about 9,500 from my Department.

Each of the totals given above includes some overseas students.
