HC Deb 25 April 1956 vol 551 cc146-7W
62. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what were the recommendations of the recent round table conference held at Achimota in the Gold Coast to discuss regional devolution; and to what extent Ashanti was represented at that conference.

Mr. Hare

The conference accepted the pattern of Sir Frederick Bourne's recommendations and, in addition, recommended measures to give Chiefs an acknowledged position in the conduct of regional affairs. As I said on 22nd February in reply to a Question by the hon. and learned Member for Aberdeen, North (Mr. Hector Hughes) the National Liberation Movement and its associates refused to attend the conference. I am arranging for copies of the Report of the conference to be placed in the Library of the House.
