31. Mr. Paton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many criminals have been sentenced to preventive detention in each of the last five years; and what has been the average period to which they have been so sentenced during each of these years.

Mr. Deedes

The numbers of persons received into prison during the years 1951 to 1955 after sentence of preventive detention (excluding those whose sentences were subsequently varied, on appeal, to sentences of imprisonment or otherwise) were:

Mr. Deedes

One in 1951, one in 1953, three in 1954 and two in 1955. In three cases the sentence was reduced on appeal.
