65. Mrs. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the value of the damage done in the village of Phrenaros in Cyprus on the night of 27th-28th March by British troops; and what compensation arrangements are being made.
§ Mr. HareInvestigations are not yet completed into damage alleged to have been caused by security forces in Phreneros village following the murder of a British Army officer and his driver in an ambush there. The value of damage is estimated by the Cyprus Government at £1,100 (mostly in respect of a coffee shop adjacent to the scene of the ambush destroyed by a fire for which responsibility has not been established. If the police investigations show that there was any instance of wanton damage by the security forces, then compensation will be paid.
