HC Deb 16 April 1956 vol 551 c50W
Mr. P. Williams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what action he proposes to take to ensure improved supplies of steel to British shipyards.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

As I indicated in answer to Questions by the hon. Members for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East (Mr. Blenkinsop) and Sunderland, North (Mr. Willey) on 15th February, exports of steel plate have been curtailed in the interest of users of plate. I am glad to say there is likely to be some increase in home production during the year and the Iron and Steel Board is also now reviewing with steel makers the provision of further capacity for plate production. Discussions between my noble Friend and my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade are continuing.
