HC Deb 11 April 1956 vol 551 c20W
70. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for War what control he exercises over amenities, service and prices in the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes' stores, and over the distribution of profits made by that organisation

Mr. Head

The control exercised by the Service Ministers has not changed recently, and for details I would refer the hon. Member to a reply given by my predecessor the right hon. Member for Easington (Mr. Shinwell) on 17th November. 1949. Briefly, no direct Ministerial control is exercised over the day to day business of N.A.A.F.I., but any proposal substantially affecting the well-being of Service men is discussed with the Service Departments. Where N.A.A.F.I. receive free goods or services from Service votes the scale of such contributions is controlled by the Department concerned. As to profits, the rates of rebates and discounts are fixed with the agreement of the Service Ministers, as are the amounts to be distributed annually from any surplus.
