Miss Burtonasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the kite mark of the British Standards Institution has been brought into disrepute as the result of a motor cyclist's death; that not only in crash helmets is the standard of such marks too low; and whether, as the British Standards Institution receives a grant of £100,000 per annum from the Government, he will now give the Institution authority to raise standards where necessary.
§ Mr. Walker-SmithMy right hon. Friend does not accept the hon. Member's statement about the kite mark and does not agree that standards generally are too low. The British Standards Institution does not require any authority from the Board of Trade to raise standards where it considers this to be desirable.
