HC Deb 25 November 1955 vol 546 c153W
Mr. C. I. Orr-Ewing

asked the Minister of Defence the total cost to the Exchequer of the new education allowances for Service children; and what would be the extra cost of starting these educational allowances at 9 years of age in place of 11 years of age.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

The best estimate that can be made at present is that it may cost about £700,000 in a full year and that it might cost a further £200,000 if the age limit of children eligible for these allowances were reduced from 11 years to 9.
