HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 c135W
37. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Minister of Labour what changes have taken place since 1951 in the relationship between the number of persons employed in distribution and production, respectively.

Sir W. Monckton

There has been an increase of 440,000 in the number of persons engaged in production compared with an increase of 193,000 in distribution. As, however, the number engaged in production is much larger than that engaged in distribution, the effect is that for every 100 persons engaged in distribution there were 480 in production in 1951 and 460 in 1955.
