HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 c145W
98. Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if, in the interests of railway safety, he will give a general direction to the British Transport Commission to fit speedometers to railway locomotives.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

No. All new electric and diesel locomotives built for the British Transport Commission under their modernisation plan are to be fitted with speedometers. It has also been their policy since 1952 to fit speedometers to new steam locomotives designed for passenger and mixed traffic.
