HC Deb 23 November 1955 vol 546 c115W
40. Mr. Hale

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation how many toll gates and toll bridges are now in operation on public roads in the United Kingdom; and what steps are being taken to eliminate them.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

There are 6 tolls on trunk roads, 19 on classified roads and 78 on unclassified and private roads. These include 45 toll bridges open to motor traffic.

At present I am concentrating the funds available on the construction and improvement of roads and bridges, and am only using the funds available to me to redeem tolls when this is a consequence of the building of a new or reconstructed bridge.
